Notes |
The items in this collection were all sent to and displayed at Marshall County High School, Benton, Kentucky, in the aftermath of a school shooting that took place on January 23, 2018. Two students, Bailey Nicole Holt and Preston Ryan Cope, were killed, and fourteen others were wounded. This collection is a sampling of materials created by children and adults in and around Marshall County, nationally, and even internationally. This origami piece originates from Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky, located a half an hour drive from Benton. Completed by Murray State faculty, staff, and students, the mobile is composed of 1,000 cranes. Some of the cranes feature the name of the folder. Led by Murray State's Japanese outreach coordinator, Airi Yamamoto, over 300 people created the first 700 cranes at various sessions and events both on and off campus. Senba-zuru is a string of 1,000 paper cranes; the crane is symbolic in Japanese culture of peace, happiness, and long life. There is also a legend that claims anyone who folded 1,000 cranes is either granted a lifetime of good luck and happiness or one wish. |
