Notes |
John Breathitt (1786-1834) was governor of Kentucky from 1832 to 1834. A supporter of strong national government, Breathitt was the only Democrat elected in a period dominated by the Whig party. In his 1832 address to the legislature, Breathitt supported the Lexington and Ohio Railroad and argued Kentucky should strengthen ties with other states. He objected to South Carolina's claim that states could reject national laws they disagreed with -- an argument that foreshadowed the Civil War. |
