Description |
This is the salt kettle from the Clay County Salt Works. The piece is an iron kettle that it oval in shape. The kettle has two protrusions on each side (approximately 3 inches down from the rim) to help stabilize the kettle in place. The piece has a hole in the bottom center of the kettle. |
Notes |
The piece was molded near Owingsville in 1845 for the Clay County Salt Works which, at that time, was owned by the Bates and Walker families. It was brought to Garrad County in 1858 by Wade Hampton Walker. |
