Notes |
William Sylvester Taylor (1853 -1928) was the 33rd Governor of Kentucky, serving from December 12, 1899 to January 31, 1900. Taylor defeated Democrat William Goebel in a close election in 1899. Goebel disputed the results, but was shot by an assassin while the election was being reviewed. Taylor declared a state of emergency, but Democrats declared Goebel the true winner and indicted Taylor as an accessory to murder. Forced to flee, Taylor moved to Indiana where he resisted attempts to send him back to Frankfort to stand trial. Painted by artist Miss Vesta DePaul. |
