Description |
This cream silk ribbon has red text that reads "For Judge of the Court of Appeals" across the top portion of the ribbon. The center has a red and white printed bust photograph of James Cantrill with a capitalized and underlined caption that reads "Jas. E. Cantrill." The bottom says, "We love him for the enemies he has made." The top edge of the ribbon wraps around a strip of cardstock and is secured by a dark red ribbon extending through two holes along the top edge. The red ribbon extends to the front and hangs down several inches. The sides of the ribbon are the selvages and the bottom of the ribbon is cut inward at an opposite angle cut. |
Notes |
James E. Cantrill (1839-1909) lived in Georgetown, Scott County, Kentucky. He was born in Bourbon County, the son of James Campbell Cantrill, and served as a Confederate soldier, becoming a Captain in Morgan's Men. He served as Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky (1879-83), died in 1909 and is buried at Georgetown Cemetery in Georgetown, Kentucky. Cantrill also served as a Circuit Court judge. A Democrat, Cantrill used his authority to back the Democratic takeover of state government in the wake of Governor William Goebel's assassination. It was Cantrill who swore Goebel in as Governor the second time (as Goebel was sworn in twice to ensure legitimacy). In 1904, Cantrill campaigned for a seat on the Court of Appeals (then the only appellate court in Kentucky, as the KY Supreme Court would not exist for several more decades). This ribbon may be from that campaign. |
