Notes |
This was worn by Joseph P. Nuckols, Colonel of the 4th Ky. Infantry, CSA, later Adj't Gen'l of Kentucky (1879-1883). This was purchased from the Dallas Costume shop, who bought it in the early 1960's from Rob't M. Watkin, grandson of Nuckols. Joseph P. Nuckols was appointed Adjutant General and Inspector General of Kentucky by Governor Luke P. Blackburn on September 30, 1879. This appointment would combine the two offices that had coexisted since their creation by the Militia Act of 1861, thus ending long standing confusion concerning the authority of the two offices. Nuckols served as Keeper of the Arsenal under Adjutant General John M. Wright, and as such undoubtedly visited this building on numerous occasions. Nuckols was a former colonel of the 4th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, CSA, and was wounded during the battles of Shiloh, Murfreesboro, and Chickamauga. The fact that he was a former Confederate officer probably led to his choice of gray as a uniform color, when dark blue was the accepted Regular Army standard. |
