Description |
This regimental artillery flag has a red silk field with crossed cannons at center. The cannons fill an area about 14 ½" square and are embroidered with great detail in silk thread. Above the cannons is a ribbon, the center of which is a piece of white silk that has "U.S." embroidered on it in red thread and is applied to the red field and embellished with gold embroidery on the edges. Below the cannons is another applied ribbon but it has no lettering on it. The flag was once edged with gold colored cotton fringe, but there are only two remnants on the top edge, one about 12 inches and one about nine inches. There is one loose pieces of red silk that is lighter than the rest and may be out of place. The reverse appears identical. |
Notes |
This is not a typical Civil War era United States regimental flag. Regulations called for a blue field. The ribbons of white silk and heavy embroidery are unusual. Another unusual aspect is the lack of a regimental identification, only the simple "U.S.". |
