Description |
A) The bodice has a fourteen hook and eye front closure. There are eight cut glass decorative buttons but the top and bottom ones are missing. The fabric is blue and black horizontal stripes with sections of red, green, white, blue, and black horizontal stripes. There is a black velvet band with jet beading along the top in a diamond pattern. Along the base of the velvet band is a woven cloth band from which jet beads dangle. This velvet band is located around the lower part of the bodice. The black band extends to the sleeves along the dropped shoulder seam. There is a lace collar on the inside of the neck line. The cuffs of the sleeves is made of the same black velvet fabric with diamond jet pattern. The bodice is lined with polished cotton and is boned. There are nine bones in the bodice. B) Skirt: The skirt is made of panels of the same fabric. It is pleated and gathered at the waist. There is a slit pocket on the proper left side. The skirt goes into a train at the back. The bottom is bound with cotton binding tape. It also has the polished cotton lining. The waistband is missing. |

This piece is from the Eleanor Parker Hopkins collection. Ms. Hopkins was a costume and furnishing researcher for the stage and movie industry. Hopkins was born in Lexington, Kentucky, had a studio in New York in the 1920s, but returned to Lexington by 1940. She appears to have continued her work from Lexington, including working as an advisor on the restoration of Hunt House in Lexington. Eleanor Parker was born Lexington, Kentucky on January 5, 1879 and she died on April 19, 1974 in Lexington, at 95 years of age. Her body was interred in Lexington Cemetery, Lexington, Kentucky. She married Addison Hopkins, and they had one child named Helen Elizabeth Hopkins. |
