This is a photolithograph print of the cartoon "Derby '92 Festival" by Hugh Haynie. It features the image of a dog with hat and cane. There is a Derby Festival sign in background and six balloons with smiley faces. In the lower right corner is a poem about the Derby Festival. The artist's signature is in the lower right corner. |

Hugh Smith Haynie was born February 6, 1927 in Reedville, VA. Haynie served in the US Coast Guard and following WWII attended the College of William and Mary. Following college, Haynie began his career as a cartoonist in Richmond, VA in 1953. Haynie then moved to Greensboro, NC and Atlanta, GA before he was hiried by Barry Bingham of the Louisville Courier-Journal in 1958. Haynie worked for the Courier-Journal until his retirement on October 1, 1995. Hugh Haynie passed away in 1999. An exhibit of his work was displayed at the Kentucky Historical Society from December 14, 2002-March 30, 2003. In many of his works, Haynie hid the name Lois in the drawing. Lois was Hugh Haynie's wife. |
