Notes |
An old card in the file for this object reads, "Made by Sarah Margaret Lander in 1787." Given in memory of Fannie Boone Berry (1857-1935) and Louvenia Scott (1866-1936). One of the donors, Bernice Berry (1883-1966), was Fannie's daughter. Fannie and Louvenia were cousins (their grandparents were Henry and Margaret Lander). Their grandmother was named Margaret "Peggy" Allen Lander (1788-1853), but her birth date suggests she may not be the maker. No Sarah Lander alive in 1787 with clear connection to this family was found. The Charles Lander family moved to Bourbon County between 1786 and 1825. This coverlet may have been used there or in Clark County where later family members moved. This coverlet once had a blue ribbon attached to it from when it won first place in a contest. This was in 1932 when the piece was 145 years old. The double weave was beyond the capabilities of most early American home weavers. "There were only a few weavers in Kentucky who could weave fine double geometric coverlets. As a rule, these were professional weavers. The professional weavers were established in larger towns or traveled about the state weaving wherever they happened to find weaving to do....the yarns of the double geometric coverlets were often prepared at home and then carried to the professional weavers. Sometimes the professional weaver made their own patterns but they often used printed books of patterns from England, France, or Germany. |
