Notes |
Original wall covering in the Secretary of State's office in the New Capitol when the office faced Capitol Ave. Collected from discarded scraps by the donor during installation in 1910. A note from the donor, Miss Willanna Hampton Smith describes her donation: "When the new State Capitol was built at the south end of Capital Avenue, in Frankfort, Ky in 1900 and 1901, the walls of two offices were covered with velvet. The Governor's office with brown and the Secretary of State with green. These pieces of velvet were scrap from the work which I picked up from the floors at the time. Here, also, is a small 'book' (as they are called) containing several sheets of the gold leaf (or bronze) that I also picked up from the debris on the floor when the ceiling of the Court of Appeals was being decorated with this leaf. These velvets, since, have been removed from the walls, but architects or decorator's records can confirm this." |
