Description |
This is a State Guard Kepi and rain-cover. The Kepi is a blue wool cap, with silver cord over the black leather visor and knotted on either end. The ends of the silver cord are fastened to metal buttons on either side, with an emblem featuring a tent and crossed swords. There is a black ribbed cotton band along the lower edge of the exterior. It is lined with black silk and has a stamped flag maker's mark on the top center of the crown. There are four black metal air vents throughout the crown. |
Notes |
The 1st Cavalry regiment of Kentucky from the period of this cap is nonexistant, except for the unrecognized or federalized units of Cavalry that were organized during the S.A.W. which saw no service. It may be possible that the 1st Ky Inf., Louisville Legion, may have had a "cavalry' company that still wore these. The US Army wore this type of kepi for a short while, about 1896-1902. |
