Notes |
A two handed adz similar to a carpenter's adz except generally lighter weight and having a tapered spike in place of the flat poll. Used extensively in the ship and boat building trade for smoothing decks as well as cutting both curved and straight framing timbers. The spike was used to drive nails below the surface of the decking, to avoid interference when smoothing the surface. Conventional usage is a chipping or smoothing action roughly between the feet of the user. An unsteady hand or glancing blow could easily result in an injury. |
