Description |
This communion pitcher (part a) and silver cloth (part b) are part of a chaplain's communion set used by the 138th Field Artillery. The communion pitcher has an six-sided base. The body of the pitcher is round with two thin bands that extend around the widest part the container. The pitcher features the seal of the Commonwealth of Kentucky on one side and the seal of the Episcopal Diocese of Kentucky on the other. On the surface of the pitcher, directly below the spout, there is engraved text: "Presented by / Members of Calvary Episcopal Church / Louisville, Ky. / to / First Regiment of Infantry / Kentucky National Guard / 1916." There are two bands around the neck of the pitcher. The handle has a tapered end with a clover-shaped detail on the inside of the handle. The lid is secured with a clover-shaped base attached to the hinge. The domed lid has a cross on the top. The base of the pitcher has three silver marks from The Gorham Manufacturing Company as well as "STERLING / CTW." The pitcher is stored inside of a gray rectangular silver cloth pouch (part b) that has three serged seams and has a serged opening. There is an embroidered cloth label on the front of the pouch that reads, "THE GORHAM CO. / FIFTH AVENUE / NEW YORK." |
Notes |
This communion set was used by the chaplain of the 1st Kentucky Infantry, later the 138th Field Artillery, Kentucky National Guard during the 1930's and 1940's. The set was given to the regiment by the Calvary Episcopal Church in Louisville, Kentucky. The set was then given to Col. George M. Chescheir while he was commander of the 138th before World War II. |
