Description |
This is a U.S. Navy service cap. It is made of black wool, with a black ribbed cotton band along the lower outer edge. There is a gold colored strap over the visor, which is made of black vinyl. There are two gold buttons on either side of the gold colored strap, located on each of the far sides and featuring an eagle emblem. A metal and brass insignia is located on the front center, featuring an eagle clutching a shield (with stars and stripes), as well as two crossing anchors. There is a brown interior headband with manufactured holes, in diagonal lines. White leather trim is above the brown leather headband and the lining of the top of the crown is made of black cotton. There is a white leather piece on the top of the crown, with a "Pancroft/Uniform/Headwear" maker's stamp (in blue), that is covered in plastic. A paper tag is beneath the stamp, and is also covered in plastic, reading: "J.H. Ward, III/Lieut., U.S.N.R.,/Flag Lt., CinCLant."It is machine-stitched. There are four black metal air vents throughout the crown, two on either far side. |

Worn by donor, Joseph Ingram, in WWII while serving as an aid to C-in-C Atlantic. Ingram was an aide to Kentuckian Hugh Rodman in WWII. |
