Notes |
This coin belonged to Captain Judy Greenwell Mitro. Judy began her service in the Air Force in 1974 as an Aircraft Mechanic. Judy transferred to the Kentucky Air National Guard in 1977 where she earned her commission. She rose to commander of the Kentucky Air National Guard 123rd Service Flight, whose various missions included food service, billeting, search and rescue, Morale Welfare and Recreation, and Mortuary Affairs services. Judy commanded the 123rd Service Flight in support of relief missions to Somalia during Operation Restore Hope. That operation delivered 720 tons of relief supplies into some of the hardest-hit areas of Somalia. Judy married Michael Mitro shortly after they both transferred to the Kentucky Air National Guard from Grissom Air Force Base in Indiana. When Judy became a commissioned officer, their two sons thought it funny their dad had to salute their mom at work. As military parents, the Mitros had to assign temporary custody of their kids to another when either deployed. With both serving in the Kentucky Air National Guard, it was not unusual for them to be in joint exercises, but they had to fly on different planes. They would deploy together for summer camp, but since they worked in different areas they rarely saw one another. Judy retired from the Kentucky Air National Guard in 1999. The items in this collection were donated by Mike and Judy Mitro. |
