Description |
This star pattern quilt has four-point stars (made of nine pieces of fabric) in eight rows (counting from the top). The stars are made of diamond shapes and squares. There are bright colors of yellow, green, blue, orange, pink and purple. The stars are made with diamonds made of printed fabric and squares of solid color except for the middle square which is the same fabric as the diamonds. the stars are connected with diamonds made of white cotton.The scalloped edge of the quilt has a dark green binding on all four sides. The quilt is backed with a light green cotton. There are seven stitches per inch and the piece is hand quilted and pieced. The quilting follows the outline of the shape of the piece of fabric. |

The quilt was made by Martha Lou "Mattie" Meek Holton (1874-1945) of Somerset. Martha worked at the Kentucky state prison in Frankfort for a time and also worked in department stores. Her husband, George Holton, was a farmer in Somerset. The couple married in 1892 and had three children. Donated by Steven C. Macdonald on behalf of his mother, Carlisle Keller Macdonald. Carlisle was the granddaughter of Mattie. |
