Description |
This is an electric brass and glass neo-classical chandelier. It consists of a pendant style ceiling plate (part a), decorated with urns and festoons, to which is attached a tubular brass spacer with an O-ring at the bottom. Attached to the O-ring are four links of brass chain attached to the chandelier. The chandelier is round with four decorative brass bare bulb sockets around the perimeter and a white painted reflector area on the bottom surrounding a central recessed area which houses a light bulb socket and a collar with 4 set screws, (one missing), for receiving the opal-white glass pendant shade. The shade (part b) is decorated with the enameled images of four hanging baskets with overflowing enameled blue flower festoons, surrounded by gold borders. A brass tassel hangs from the bottom of the shade. |
Notes |
This chandelier was from Adath Israel synagogue in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Adath Israel was founded in Hopkinsville around 1910. Henry Bohn, who died in 1923, left a bequest of $5000 to the congregation in order to build a synagogue. The construction of the congregation's first synagogue started in 1925. Adath Israel member Wolf Geller designed the neo-classical building. Located on Sixth Street between Clay and Liberty, the synagogue was dedicated in 1925. By the 1970s, the Jewish community of Hopkinsville had dropped considerably. By 1976, the Adath Israel congregation fell to seven members. The next year, the remaining members decided to disband the congregation. The synagogue's roof collapsed in 1977 during a heavy snowstorm, and the building was demolished. |
