This lithographed theatrical poster features a full-length image of the actor Joseph Jefferson as the pre-sleep Rip Van Winkle. He is leaning against a food strewn table with a musket in his hands. He is dressed in a frock coat and short pants. A window is to the right. Joseph Jefferson (1829-1905) was a Pennsylvania born actor closely identified with the title role of Rip Van Winkle. This poster was used as packing material in miscellaneous containers recovered from the attic of the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Ky. The poster was deaccessioned by the Speed in 1991 and transferred to the Kentucky Historical Society in 1997. |
