Description |
This is a democratic state convention delegate ribbon from Ottumwa, Iowa. It is made of dark blue silk and has silver printed text that reads ""DELEGATE / DEMOCRATIC / STATE / CONVENTION / OTTUMWA, IA. / AUGUST 12, / 1896." There is a printed silver likeness of William Jennings Bryan in the center of the ribbon under the word "CONVENTION". The sides of the ribbon are the selvages, the top is cut and unfinished, and the bottom of the ribbon is finished with a v-cut shaped end. |
Notes |
William Jennings Bryan ran unsuccessfully three times as the U.S. Democratic presidential candidate in 1896, 1900 and 1908. Bryan's maternal great grandfather Israel Jennings lived in Mason County, Kentucky before moving his family to Illinois, but this ribbon's Kentucky connection beyond that is uncertain except that it was owned by career Kentucky politician Drexell R. Davis. |
