Description |
This large coin silver spoon has a down curved semi-pointed handle and simple transition. The letters "SB" are engraved on the handle. On the back the maker's mark reads "WMB." |
Notes |
The genealogical records and maker's mark reveal that the "SB" monogram is probably Sarah Lincoln Boone, 1727-1810 or possibly Sarah Boone Gearhart, 1782-1852. [Sarah Boone Gearhart is the grand daughter of Sarah Lincoln Boone.] These would not be the spoons of Sarah Boone the mother of Daniel (1700-1777) as held by family tradition. [see genealogy research in file]. The silversmith hallmark was used by William Mannerback. He was a silversmith in Reading, Pennsylvania c. 1790 to c. 1838. Stylistically the spoons appear to date from the 1790s and later (see Ensko, American Silversmiths and Their Marks III, p. 142). [Stupperich, Andy, 2010-09-30]; Family tradition held that these spoons belonged to Sarah Boone, mother of Daniel Boone. The donor was descended from Boone through his grandfather. These three spoons (1984.6.1-3) were passed down from Clarence Frick Gearhart (donor's grandfather) to Mr. Sten Peterson's mother to Sten Peterson (donor). [old MIMSY note, undated]; "Set of three spoons which belonged to Daniel Boone's Mother, Sarah Boone. Mr. Sten Peterson is a descendent of the Boone family through his grandfather, Clarence Frick Gearhart of Catawissa, Pa. (old card)" [from KHS catalog card, c. 1984]. |
