Notes |
The administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1932-1945) created the Works Progress Administration (WPA) to provide jobs for millions of unemployed Americans. In 1935, the Federal Art Project became part of the WPA, which resulted in jobs for hundreds of artists. In Kentucky, this manifested itself as the WPA State-Wide Museum Project. The Works Progress Administration, through the Kentucky State-Wide Museum Project, created a number of "Aids to Visual Education." Artists made these educational tools available to schools, libraries, and museums through the states. These aids included models of famous historic buildings and homes, windowsill dioramas depicting significant moments in American history, and hand-tinted silk-screened prints illustrating the history of the American flag, Arthurian Legends, and the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. |
