This auger was used with auger bit catalogued number 2001.28.14. It was used to drill the intial bung hole prior to using a tapered auger. This tool is from Knodel's cooper's tool chest (2001.28.1) Charles H. Knodel was born in Karlshru, Germany in 1865 and came to Louisville as a young man. He met his wife, Fredericka, also from Karlshru, in America. A cooper by trade, Charles Knodel became a foreman at J. Schwarzwalder & Sons in Louisville, a cooperage listed at 18th and Magnolia in the 1904 Louisville City Directory. Knodel built a house at 1760 West Burnett. |
