Notes |
Simon Bolivar Buckner (1823-1914) was governor of Kentucky from 1887 to 1891. Buckner was a former Confederate solider who pledged to run state government without any debt. In 1890, he criticized the legislature for reducing the state property tax when it was clear that expenses would soon exceed the state's income. When the treasury ran out of money, Buckner quietly loaned the state money from his own pocket to cover the debt. The picture was painted from one of Buckner's favorite photographs of himself. The artist, Ferdinand G. Walker (1859-1927), was active in Indiana and Kentucky. He is known for Portrait and landscape murals. |
