Description |
This is page 421 from Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, March 6, 1875 edition. The bottom portion of the page is shows a scene with the caption, "Louisville, KY.-The Mardi-Gras Carnival-street procession illustrating the facts and follies of the day.-from a sketch by George Kerr." The image depicts a chaotic street scene in which a parade of bizarre characters are strolling through a crowed street. At the front of the procession are women with large noses with a sign that reads "Crusaders from Ind." They are followed by a man in a top hat with a carpet bag that reads "Louisiana Legislature" A wolf with a body of two books with the title "That $5000 Book Found at Last Memoirs George IV," a large man holding a massive spoon with his arm holding a scroll reading "Civil Rights" over an African American woman, another man with a large nose holding a sign that reads "Sheridans Banditti I am not Afraid," another large nosed man with a conical hat reading "Banditti," a large man in a military uniform with a bucket hat, several men in turbans and other military processions. This procession appears to be walking by a group of men in top hats and racial caricatured faces sitting on a podium that reads "The Loyal Legislature of Louisiana." There is a crowd in the foreground watching the activity. On the left side of this mob, a person with a large noise and striped pants is running away from a man in the crowd. A sign on his back reads "robber." Next to this activity a monkey is attempting to climb up a woman with a sign "Crusader from Indiana" on her back. In the right corner of the image, there is a tall woman with a frightened expression being pulled by a short man. The Stores in the background also have various texts on the walls. On the large central building, the corner reads "Ches." This building also has a sign that reads "George Wolf/ Successor/of/ Wolf and Durbin." The building off to the distance reads "Eagle." The top half of the paper contains two articles with the titles "Hon. John Young Brown. / The Marti Gras Carnival. In Louisville Ky. / A Druidical Wedding." In between these articles is a portrait of "Hon. John Young Brown, Member of Congress from Kentucky,--From a Photograph by Rice Bros., Washington, D. C." The backside of the page is also filled with articles with the following titles, "The Lances of the Guard/ The Cure of Foutot/ Scene Painting/ Rents In New York." |
