Full name of sitter is Rosa Vertner Jeffrey. She was born on 1828 in Natchez, Mississippi and died on October 6, 1894 in Lexington, Kentucky. She was the daughter of John Y. and (Abercrombie) Griffith. She moved with her adoptive parents at the age of ten to Lexington, where she attended the seminary of Bishop Smith. At seventeen she married a Claude M. Johnson of Louisiana and after his death she married again in 1863. This time to a man named Alexander Jeffery of Edinburgh, Scotland. She was known to also be a poet and novelist and was the author of the following: Poems by Rosa (1857), Woodburn (1864), Daisy Dare and Baby Power (1871), The Crimson Hand (1881) and Marah (1884). She was also noted for her incredibly beauty. The artist William T. Hunleigh was born in 1848 and died in 1916. He was a noted landscape artist and several portraits and landscapes are found in the collection. He was buried in the Georgetown cemetery found in Georgetown, Kentucky |
