Description |
This is a muzzle loading, percussion-cap converted rifle with a full maple stock. The percussion lock has a simple scroll hammer. The lock plate has engraved decorations, including rays around the back pin, a bird, the lock makers mark, and rays around a pin above the mark. The iron, oval trigger guard has and small scroll finger extension. There are two triggers. The maple butt stock has an iron butt plate extending to the top with a beaded end. There is an iron toe plate with a clipped decorative end. The left side has a raised cheek rest with beaded horizontal lines. There is decorative scroll side plate on the left side for the lock screws. The barrel is octagonal. There is a fixed rear sight and a bar fore sight over a small brass inset plate. The barrel tang has a simple finial end. The stock terminates with an iron fore cap. There are four iron keys in the barrel stock. There is a wood ramrod which fits into two iron thimbles and the iron thimble entry tube. |
Notes |
Family tradition held that this rifle originally belonged to Col. John Hardin, (1753-1792). The lock, examined by gunsmith C. Doc Haddaway in 1976, appears to be British, dating 1808-1829. |
