Description |
This record has three parts. Part A is an Iraqi gas mask. It is made of green rubber with black elastic straps. Part B an Iraqi gas mask bag. It is made of olive drab cotton canvas. There are three lift-a-dot closures, two adjustable tan straps and black metal buckles. There are several smaller pockets on the interior. This is appears to be a copy of a US M9A1 gas mask bag. There is writing on the strap where it attaches on the front. Part C is a green painted metal filter canister. |

Members of the 623rd Field Artillery Battalion brought this item back from Iraq. It was then donated to the Kentucky Military History Museum. The 623rd Field Artillery Battalion (Glasgow, Tompkinsville, Campbellsville, Monticello, Springfield) participated in Desert Storm. On December 9, 1990, the units left for training at Fort Campbell. The battalion departed for Saudi Arabia on February 9, 1991, arriving in Dhahran. The battalion was assigned to the 196th Field Artillery Group, with a General Support mission. As the ground war progressed, the battalion advanced through the deserts of Saudi Arabia and Iraq, attempting to catch up with the Iraqi Republican Guard, but the ground war was over before they could engage them. There were no casualties or injuries within the battalion. |
