Description |
This is large grain bin made of a wooden rectangular box of circular sawn lumber of large dimension (2 x 8, 2 x 13.25, 1 x 14.5". There are canted lids on the front with five triangular hinges on them. The outer right hinge may be original while the two center hinges are eight screw galvanized steel which are newer. There are cut and wrought iron spikes and nails in the original construction. There are two compartments inside--each has its own lid although markings on the lids suggest that they were once one piece. The lid and top overhangs the sides by two inches. The left compartment is lined with galvanized tin attached with cut nails. There is an octagonal patch in the bottom over what might have been a former drain. The upper left side of the compartment has a 2.125" diameter hole which slants inward. The right compartment floor has four tin sheets laid on it. |
Notes |
The donor was born in 1919 and grew up on his family's 230 acre farm in Jefferson County. Many of the farm tools he used date back to the time of his grandfather. The donor moved to a farm in Oldham County in the 1950s. For many years, the family operated a dairy farm operation. They called this their "mouse proof" grain bin because of the lined compartment. The lined compartment on the left obviously once held a drain in the bottom. It was watertight, and it had a downward sloping supply hole at the top left for unknown reasons. |
