Description |
This is Alben Barkley's gray felt fedora. The hat has a wide black grosgrain band and a brim edged in lavender gray grosgrain ribbon. Inside is a brown leather sweatband with a maker's mark in gold on the proper left side that reads "Lee Fifth/ Avenue/ Water Bloc." On the front side of the hat the hatband has an inscription in gold that reads "The Veep." The hat has a cream colored satin lining with the maker's mark printed in black reading "Lee Fifth/ Avenue/ Water Bloc." The hatbox (part b and c) is an oval shaped cardboard box with seperate lid and body. The cardboard is covered with black paper and the lid is edged in gold. The body of the box has the inscription "LEE" in two places. The lid has the maker's label in the top center which is a gold background with black and red edging with the following inscription in the center in black: "LEE/ Guild/ New York." Beneath that is the inscription "REG. U.S. PAT. OFF" in white. |

Alben William Barkley (1877-1956) was a Graves County, Kentucky politician who served as the 35th Vice President of the United States under President Harry S. Truman. He also served in the House of Representatives from Kentucky's first district and the Senate, becoming the Senate Majority Leader in 1937. He ran for president in 1952 but was defeated for the Democratic nomination. |
