This is a froe. It has a blacksmith made wrought iron blade with a hand hewn wooden handle. |
Notes |
A froe's wedge-shaped blade was struck on the top edge by a crude wooden maul, after being positioned parallel with the end grain of a sawn log. The driven blade was then rived back and forth until a shingle, rough clapboard, tool handle, chair leg, barrel stave, or other rough unit was produced. |
