Description |
This is a political cartoon entitled "The Well Wisher." It is a charcoal on onion-skin paper showing King Swope, dressed as a prize fighter, sitting on stool in the corner of a boxing ring. There is a bucket and sponge at his feet. There is a well dressed man in a suit and top hat labeled "Smear Roosevelt Politician." He has his arm around Swope's shoulders. Paul Plaschke's signature is behind the bucket in the lower right corner. |
Notes |
Paul Plaschke was a cartoonist for the Louisville Commercial, Louisville Post, and Louisville Times. Although undated, this cartoon probably dates from the 1935 struggle between Governor Ruby Laffoon and Lt. Governor A.B. "Happy" Chandler over who would be the Democratic Party gubernatoral nominee in 1935. King Swope (1893-1961) was the Republican nominee, a Lexington lawyer and judge. |
