Description |
This is a wooden cane made from the wreckage of the Alice Dean steamboat. It has an octagonal body with and elongated turned handle. It is inscribed "Alice Dean July 1863/8" on one side and "W.D.W. 1914" on another. |
Notes |
Owned by Oliver Welch Cosby. Cosby was a member of Company B of the 11th Kentucky Cavalry CSA. Two of his brothers, Austin and John, were also members of the same company. Both Austin and John were killed in action at the battle of the Green River Bridge. Oliver survived the battle. He went on to ride with General John Hunt Morgan on his raid into Indiana. At Brandenburg, Kentucky Morgan's Cavalry captured the steamship "Alice Dean." The ship was used to ferry the unit across the Ohio River into Indiana. Oliver was among the men ordered to burn the "Alice Dean" after the crossing. |
