Description |
This banner is one of ten commemorating the accomplishments and contributions of famous Kentucky women. One side is a caricature of the subject and the other is a printed description of her work. This one is about Julia Britton Hooks, musical genius, abolitionist, social activist, and music teacher to many early 20th century musicians, including W. C. Handy. |
Notes |
This is part of a series of commemorative banners titled "Ten Great State Women" made by Margaret Hultz and Marie Davis. This series kicked off Women's History month in 2004. It was installed on the Kentucky State Capitol grounds and had many speakers to commemorate the day, including Governor Paul Patton, his wife Judy, and Senator Georgia Powers. Afterward, the project traveled via USPS to many public libraries around the state. Margaret Hultz and Marie Davis spoke at several of the installations including Paducah and Richmond. |
