Description |
This is a one dollar note of the H series on the Northern Bank of Kentucky. The serial number is 1853. It is located near the upper right corner and is hand written in ink. An image of George Washington in an oval frame is located in the upper right corner. Below this is the word "ONE" in white letters on a patterned background. Below this is another portrait in an oval frame, possibly of James Polk. In the center section, on the upper edge the serial number is on the left, the word "Lexington" is printed at center, and the date is hand written in ink on the right (except the numbers "18" of 1847). Below this on the left is the number "1" on a decorative round background. To the right of this is a scene of a woman seated with a document in her hands. On the document is printed "Northern Bank of Kentucky." Behind her are farm animals with a town in the distance. Below this is printed in various fonts "The President Directors of the / NORTHERN BANK OF KENTUCKY / Promise to pay ONE DOLLAR on demand at / their Bank in Lexington, to Jo. Davis or bearer." Below this on the left is a signature on signature line "MJ Scott" then the word "Cash." In the center is the image of a bank box and a dog with a key under one paw. On the right is a signature on a signature line M Telford" then "Pres." On the bottom edge is the name of the printer "Toppan.Carpenter & Co. Philad." In the upper and lower right corners is the number "1" in white on patterned ovals. In between these is the image of an unknown woman. |

Found in a KHS mailing envelope marked "Isaac Shelby Jr. Checks Ky Bank Notes from Library" George Washington was the first president of the United States. James Polk was the 16th president of the United States and was in office when the note was printed. |
