Notes |
J.C.W. Beckham (1869-1940) was governor of Kentucky from 1900 to 1907. As Lieutenant Governor, J.C.W. Beckham became governor upon William Goebel's death. Kentucky had come close to civil war over Goebel's assassination, and Beckham worked to calm the state. He won a special election in 1900 to fill Goebel's unexpired term and was reelected in 1903. At 30, he was the youngest person to serve as governor. Beckham was also an early member, officer, and benefactor of the Kentucky Historical Society. Painted and donated by Eleanor Beckham (1901-1987), the daughter of the governor. |
