Notes |
The Confederate government did not pass taxes. Instead, it relied on loans, both foreign and domestic, and the sale of war bonds. The Confederacy felt that the importance of cotton would force diplomatic recognition from England and France. There were a total of 13 issues of Confederate Bonds. All bonds were printed with coupons attached. One coupon was cut off every 6 months and redeemed at the CSA Treasury. The donor, Dr. Dean Warren Lambert, was a retired professor of history and political science, and former chairman of the history department at Berea College. Lambert died on Jan. 23, 2002. Lambert was a specialist on Russian history and the American Civil War. Lambert's book, "When the Ripe Pears Fell, The Battle of Richmond, Kentucky," was published in 1996, providing a comprehensive narrative of the Civil War battle which took place near Richmond on August 30, 1862. |
