Notes |
Elizabeth Stephens Spears (1875-1975) purchased this dress in Paris, France circa 1920. She also purchased a coat (1975.9.18) and hat (1975.9.19) to complete the outfit. Born in Bourbon County, Elizabeth's father, Charles Stephens, is noted in the Lexington Herald as "one of Paris' [Kentucky] most successful merchants and capitalists." Elizabeth married John "Woodford" Spears in 1895. Woodford worked as a seed dealer and mill operator, and he was an extensive landowner in Bourbon County. The family was of some means, making trips to Paris and Havana, Cuba. Donated by Elizabeth's daughter, Mary Spears Van Meter. |
