Notes |
Owned and used by the family of Norbert Logsdon, members of the West End Community Council in Louisville. As residents of the Westover subdivision, the Logsdons used this stencil to make "not for sale" signs to put in neighbors' yards to discourage "block-buster tactics" by realtors and "white flight" to the suburbs. At the time, realtors approached homeowners and encouraged them to sell their homes before the fear their property values would drop if Black residents moved into their neighborhoods was realized. Norbert shared, "we, as a family, felt that any person or family had a right to live wherever they could afford!" Formed in 1963, an immediate purpose of the West End Community Council in Louisville was to concentrate efforts on the "housing problem", with emphasis on an educational program to stop panic selling. The Council was "attempting to create an atmosphere in which those who want to stay can do so. We are attemping to put these people in touch with each other so that they--along with their [Black] neighbors--may become a cohesive force." |
