Description |
This hand tinted lithograph depicts Zachary Taylor, in the left foreground, riding a horse in front of a line of American troops in blue uniforms assaulting a line of green-uniformed Mexican artillery. An American officer gestures at the Mexican line while waving his sword above his head in front of the line of advancing Americans. A dead horse, a dead Mexican soldier and an American soldier firing a rifle are in the immediate foreground. The American flag waves over the center of the American army. The picture is surrounded by a black double-line border. In the lower left below the border, is black text reading, "LITH. & PUB. BY N. CURRIER." The lower right has more black text, "33 SPRUCE ST. N.Y." while the center holds even more: "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1846 by N. Currier, in the Clerk office of the District Court of the Southern District of N.Y." Centered below that text is the title of the piece, in white, outlined in black: ""GENL. TAYLOR AT THE BATTLE OF PALO ALTO." The details of the print are typed in black below this: "MAY 8th 1846 / 439." |

Taylor, the 12th U.S. president, was born in 1784 and died in 1850. Zachary Taylor commanded American forces in the Mexican War and defeated the Mexican Army at Palo Alto in 1846 and Buena Vista in 1847. On the strength of his military reputation, he was elected president in 1849 on the Whig Ticket. He died of typhus fever in 1850. Edmund and Elijah Kellogg operated a publishing house ion Hartford CT. An 1849 newspaper reported that the Kellogg presses "run off daily from 3,000 to 4,000 copies of various popular prints." |
