Description |
This crazy quilt is pieced on a foundation and backed witha heavy gold -colored polished cotton. A maroon velvet cross bisects the quilt and divides it into four quarters. Orange flower baskets with ribbons are embroidered on the cross with a larger version in the center of the cross. There are two baskets in descending size on each of the arms of the cross making for a total of nine baskets on the cross. The fabrics for the main part of the quilt are cut irregularly and pieced together on the foundation. The quilt features elaborate feather stitching. There are many different fabrics used in the quilt including velvets, brocades, file, "eyelash", tapestry, moiré, cut velvets, machine embroidered silks, satins, and printed silks. Larger pieces are decorated with an outline and are filled in with embroidery of flowers, vases, umbrellas, butterflies, and women in theatrical poses. Other needlework pictures are constructed from velvet ribbons including a gold seedpod and a pink and green flower. The colors of the quilt are varied but include black, blues, greens, and various reds. |
