Notes |
At age 15, Lisa Luthy of Campbell County became the first young woman in Kentucky to win a regional championship in the Soap Box Derby, from the Northern Kentucky-Greater Cincinnati region. In August 1975, Luthy competed in the national competition in Akron, OH, winning her first heat but losing in the second round. In a pre-race ritual, racers throw individualized buttons to race fans. Luthy began racing in the derby in 1972 in cars built by her father, James Luthy. The Soap Box Derby, a race for gravity powered cars, began in 1934. |
