Description |
This is a white cotton girls' dress. The dress features an empire waist with two drawstrings just below bust. The fabric has vertical lines of lace interwoven in it. It has short sleeves. The cuffs and collar have embroidered, scalloped, and cutwork trims. The back of the dress has a placket open to below waist with no signs of a closure method except drawstrings. The breast is gathered onto the collar, giving the bodice a wrinkled pleated look. The dress has a 2-inch hem that appears entirely hand stitched. |
Notes |
ca. 1820 In 1931, the donor's great aunt, Sally Robinson, remembered this dress as "Dress Hettie Bailey wore when she was 15 yrs old." Her sister, Hettie Elizabeth Robinson Bailey was born in Frankfort in 1857, the daughter of Elizabeth G. "Bettie" Williams (b. 1-22-1827, Anderson Co) and Jephthah David Robinson (b.12-10-1811, Frankfort). She married Franklin Bailey who owned a general store in Bagdad, Shelby County. According to Ancestry.com, Franklin was also the Director of Peoples Bank of Bagdad. Museum staff felt this dress looked too early for 1872. The empire waist might date it as early as 1820. |
