Notes |
This coverall was worn by Edward Earhart while serving in Hawaii before being transferred to the Pentagon. While in Hawaii, Earhart volunteered as a guide at the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor. September 11th was Petty Officer Edward Earhart's day off. He had been asked to come in that day to help train a new officer in the daily routine of the Naval Ice Center. Earhart arrived that day, helped prepare and present the morning weather report, and returned to his office in time to view the terrible news from New York on his computer screen. He exclaimed, "We are going to have to do something about this." At 9:37 am, immediately after those words were spoken, American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into Pentagon taking the life of Aerographer's Mate First Class Edward Earhart. Earhart, a native of Rowan County grew up on Christy Creek. He was active in sports and played football for Rowan County High School. After graduation, Edward attended Morehead State for a year and a half and then went into the U. S. Navy. He was sworn in at Lexington, KY. Petty Officer Earhart's naval career spanned only a few years, but in that time he had served at Pearl Harbor, where he volunteered time to lead tours of the memorial. He was quickly promoted and received a station at the Pentagon. In the words of Rear Admiral Thomas Donaldson, "we don't send just any sailor to the pentagon…he was the best of the best." |
